Moving to Backdrop From Drupal 5

There are no automated tools available to upgrade a Drupal 5 site to Backdrop.  A complete re-deployment of Drupal 5 assets is the only choice.  That said, a redeployment of Drupal assets to Backdrop is still often the fastest and least expensive way forward.

Moving to Backdrop From Drupal 6

Theoretically speaking, you can use Drupal's own built-in upgrade path to move from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 by yourself.  But theory sometimes doesn't translate to practice and the process can sometimes be confounded by unforeseen considerations.  Getting the input of an expert which experience in these matters can sometimes make all the difference. 

Moving to Backdrop From Drupal 7

Backdrop is a "fork" of Drupal 7 and was designed from the outset to offer the fastest, easiest upgrade path from Drupal 7.  In fact, for the purposes of upgrading, it represents itself as the "next version" of Drupal to make things go as easily as possible.  

Upgrading your site from Drupal 7 to Backdrop CMS should result in several instantaneous improvements:

  • Lots of new features like content scheduling, and automatic comment closing.
  • Pages load faster thanks to a simpler render pipeline and improved caching.
  • Improved security throughout, including password improvements.
  • Easier editorial experience with clearer interfaces and simpler terminology.
  • Faster administrator experience with fewer clicks to achieve the same goal.
  • Easier routine maintenance with push-button self-updates.

This is not to say that a Drupal 7 to Backdrop isn't without its considerations.  Before attempting the upgrade, be sure to honestly assess your own level of expertise and preparedness.  You may want to seek external advice and assistance with your Drupal 7 to Backdrop upgrade.

Moving to Backdrop From Drupal 8
